After reviewing an article on biodiversity and listening to a presentation on endangered cultures, it is quite easy to see that there is a correlation between cultures and the natural world that they live in. A person is a result of their environment and a group of people are a result from the natural world that surrounds them every day. These cultures are formed by what they have to do to survive and live off the land. This goes for any culture from Western cultures to remote indigenous cultures. Therefore if a cultures land is taken and used for something else, or is destroyed for other purposes it would make sense that in a way that culture would be somewhat destroyed too. Part of their identity which makes them who they are will have been lost. I believe that the government should not be involved in protecting culture diversity but they should not force people or do things that will force people to acclimate into the dominate culture. I do believe that governments should try to protect natural land, plants, and animals that everyone benefits from and if by doing that they save a culture then so be it.
I do not believe governments should legislate or fund to save culture diversity as long as they don’t make it impossible for one to keep their culture. I feel like protecting culture diversity should be placed on the people who want that culture to survive. Culture is formed from the people and environment around you, if that is important than the people that it is important to should protect it. You can protect a culture without throwing money at it, culture is made up of people and as long as they keep it alive, then it is protected. As previously said biodiversity and cultures are correlated with each other. That being said the government should be responsible for protecting the biodiversity of the land and natural resources, and by doing that are protecting the culture of the people who benefit from the biodiversity. So indirectly the government can and should protect culture diversity. This may be so, but the biodiversity of the natural world in a way is only part of a person’s culture and not all of it. A culture could still exist even if the biodiversity was not fully protected. Food Imports: Nigeria imports food and live animals. They're import partners are China, United States, India, Netherlands, and South Korea. They depend on those countries for food and livestock. Nigeria's people have left farming to work in the urban cities and that is why they depend on other countries for food.
International Airports: The three national airports are located in Lagos, Abuja, and Kano. These airports cannot Nigeria to the rest of the world. They bring in tourists and students. These airports represent an interconnectedness of people coming into and out of Nigeria. Afro Beat- A man named Fela Anikulapo-Kuti traveled to the USA in the 1960's. He came back to Nigeria and blended Jazz with African music to create Afro-beat. The bands use basic jazz instruments. Fela' songs were highly critical of politicians but the people like Afro-beat music. Many African music can be bought in the United States, Great Britain, and Europe. Many students also come to Nigeria to study music and learn how to play African drums. This shows globalization in that Fela learned from another country and created something new for Nigeria. As an exchange in a way African music is sold in Western countries and students travel to Nigeria to learn music. Sutherland, D. (1995). Enchantment of the world nigeria. Chicago: Children's Press Inc. Ismail, Y. (2001). Nigeria. Milwaukee, Wisconsin : Gareth Stevens Publishing In Nigeria women will leave their homes to marry. Inheritance is through the male lines so women rarely own land. Women are not involved in government and do not have social or economic equality in Nigeria.
In Nigeria woman are expected to birth children and then placed in the care of the mother, in the women's compound. If the child is a boy he lives in the woman compound until he is old enough to help his father in the fields and then moves to the men compound. It is normal for husbands and wives to live separately and most are financially separated as well. Women are also expected to weave cotton, make blankets, and prepare food. Polygamy is normal in traditional Hausa society but due to the spread of Christianity it is becoming more monogamous. If a man does have more than one wife the first wife has greater status. When a man dies his property as well as his wife go to his next brother; sometimes the brother will take her and make her his wife. It is common for there to be "divorce." Many woman will leave their husbands and marry new men. Many woman go through three or four marriages in their lives. Marriage to Nigerians is more an economic partnership than a social partnership. Woman birth and raise children, as well as complete domestic tasks. Men can be a part of government, own land, and work in the fields. These type of roles are traditional and are still a big part of the Nigerian culture today. Reference: Levy, P. (1993). Cultures of the world nigeria. New York: Times Edition Pte Ltd |
