Summary of Nigerian History
In 500 BCE the Nok civilization was located in the Jos Plateu region. Around the future country of Nigeria many different tribes were taking form. The tribes of Igbo, Hausa, and Yoruba kingdoms were established. In 1472 Portuguese trading ships arrived on Nigeria's southern coast. Portuguese began trading and also started the slave trade. Nigerian people were selling each other into slavery to make money.
In 1807 Great Britain who had a monopoly on the European slave trade outlaw slave trade in Nigeria and other Britain controlled lands. Then in 1914 Great Britain take Nigeria as a colony and names it the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria. In the early 1920's political Nigerian parties were being formed and Nigerian newspapers were calling for Nigeria's independence. In 1960 Nigeria finally declared independence from Great Britain. A few years after there were several coups. Then in 1967 the southeastern parts of Nigeria seceded and the Nigerian Civil War began. It did not end until 1970. In that same year Nigeria became one of the world's top oil producers. The profits from this were used unwisely and when the oil prices dropped in 1982 Nigeria's economy collapsed. In 2006 the Nigerian people in the Southern delta began a movement against the oil industry. Today Nigerians are trying to take steps in the right direction only time will tell.
